The Heiress - George McCarthy Date

Hi.  Today I'm going on a date with George McCarthy.

I actually know George from high school.  We met at our after school job at Green's Grocery and he was crazy about me - well, I was kinda crazy about him too.  In fact he was the first boy I ever kissed, so I guess you could say he gets the credit for starting me on my favorite "extra curricular activity."  We used to make out in the stock room of the grocery store all the time.

Then our schedule got changed and we didn't work the same days any more.  After that I didn't hear from him again.  Of course I called, but he never called back.   I figured out why he was avoiding me at school when I heard he'd been spotted with Nicole Bretweiler under the bleachers.  I would have been heart broken if Alan Futa hadn't been there to distract me.  Or was it Armond?  Anyway, it doesn't matter.  George took Nicole Bretweiler to the prom, and clung to her like lint our senior year, can you believe that?  Nobody could.  It was weird when he turned up on this show, but he's been a perfect gentleman on the other group dates, I guess that wasn't very hard to do given his 'competition'.  And he hasn't been voted off yet, so tonight was our big date night, and I was incredibly nervous, since, you know, we haven't ever talked about what happened in high school.

I think I might have started things out on the wrong foot...  When I met up with George outside his dorm, I realized I had developed the uncontrollable urge to scream at him.  "Gee, you're actually here - I didn't think you'd show up!  Did you finally learn what a 'message' is?"

"It's too bad you couldn't get cast on Nicole Bretweiler's reality show "Who Wants to Marry an Alien???"

Ok.  I guess I deserved that one...

"Come'ere" George said and pulled me against him.  "What are you so mad about?"  (I was melting quickly).  He still smelled the same, like wood chips and Christmas trees.  The harder I tried to stay mad the deeper he looked into my eyes.  30 seconds later I was sure I had never even heard of Nicole Bretweiler.  "Let's go inside," George said, "whatever it is, I promise I'll fix it."  and like a puppy mesmerized by a bouncing ball, I followed him inside his dorm.

"What's goin' on Cal?"  he asked me after lighting a fire in the fireplace.  I felt so silly for being all mad when he was being really sweet.  "Nicole's not here.  Not now, not ever.  I'm here with you and that's where I want to be."  He sounded so convincing.  But I had to make my point.  "It's just that when I didn't see you at work you stopped calling me, you didn't return my calls George, not one, and we never went out again."  George held my hand, and said "Oh Cal, you know how strict my parents were.  After that night we snuck out together they grounded me for like a year.  The only place I could go was to work."   "That didn't keep you out of touch with Nicole."   "Yeah, but only because we worked together.  I tried to change to your shift but the manager wouldn't let me.  I've missed you Cal.  I've compared every girl to you ever since."

I guess I felt a little better after he said that.

Something was making him nervous.  "Ummm, there's something I wanted to ask you or ummm to do, just not sure how to bring it up."  George said.  "Shoot"  I told him.  "Do you remember that song they used to play all the time in the store?   The one you and me used to dance to when we had to stay late to do inventory?"  "Rocksteady?"  "That's the one.  Ummm, well, I found the CD, I  thought maybe we could play it and umm, dance to it one more time."     I was blushing even though George was the one who was nervous - it was so unlike him to be nervous about anything.  I was flattered.  He hit play on the stereo, he had this all set up.  He took my hand and pulled me off the couch, and when the music started our bodies took over, and he sang to me.

You need a man that'll treat you like the woman you are
Those little boys are just fooling around with your heart
Whatcha gonna do now that you're all alone?
You need a rock not a rollin' stone
Yeah so when a boy
just ain't enough
You need a man made of stronger stuff
Get ready
Rock steady all night long

Amateurs and dilettantes
They can't give you what you really want
When all the others have been untrue
I'll give you something you can hold on to
Rock steady all night long
Rock steady till the light of dawn
Slow and easy tried and true
Rock steady
Just me and you

Rock steady all night long
Rock steady till the light of dawn
Slow and easy tried and true
Rock steady
Just me and you

We fell back onto the couch, both out of breath, but it wasn't from dancing.  We were both laughing, and then, in one of those awkward moments I knew he was going to kiss me and I knew I wanted him to.  But just before his lips touched mine he whispered "you're so beautiful"

And I remembered why kissing was my favorite pastime and I thought to myself that there's nothing else I would rather do than kiss this man.
