Session 6 : Pancakes

Oh she was fine as long as no one said anything about pancakes.

Sandwiches. Sandwiches with lots and lots of mustard. I think I'll eat this the rest of my life.

But the pancakes must have still been bothering her because she went to the necessary room a lot.

The necessary room?

Yeah it was this little building my dad and grandpa threw together so we could have a toilet and a shower. Mom said it was necessary, so we called it the necessary room.

Omigosh the squirrels smell like pancakes...

So one night we were all sitting around the campfire eating marshmallow sandwiches

Your dad got a call today Cal, the Tree Huggers Society has approved a grant for us to build a cabin right here on this land.

Here? On top of all the bugs? Won't that squish them?

No! This is their dormant season.

The cabin is an eco-friendly design, the tree huggers wouldn't have it any other way. And they'll provide funding for all of the materials.

I'd be able to collect migratory and mating data on the species here for years. I can track whole colonies Cal, wouldn't that be awesome?

Yeah, I guess it would.

So what do you think? Shall we stay here and build a cabin?

As long as it doesn't involve pancakes.

I was so excited about building a cabin. Dad said Zeiss and I could help. And although I'm sure we were more trouble than help it was so much fun.

So I'm curious Atlas, how did tree hugging, bug loving people manage to build a log cabin in the woods?

Oh well it wasn't really logs. They were post-consumer recycled, low emission eco-friendly gluten-free organic logs.

What does that mean exactly?

You don't really want to know. I think the tree hugger people invented them. Basically the bugs could still live in the logs without bothering us too much.

Your mother lived in a house built of bugs? I don't know very many women who could...

Oh, I almost forgot. Dad and Grandpa didn't tell her that part about the bugs in the walls. It was a boys-only secret. They were very small bugs anyway. We camped in the Lost Woods while the cabin was being built. Mom said we lived like hobos. I remember being afraid she was going to hate living outside like that but she really got into it. And she made a lot of sandwiches.

Dad helped me start my own bug farm and taught me how to collect data on them.

When they wiggle their antane like this Atlas, it means they are looking for their girlfriend

Sometimes too much data can bite you in the butt. Oh, and you should never look for your bug girlfriend if you aren't a bug...

Zeiss and I even got our own tree fort to play in.

Wargs at Gramsfoot! Wargs at Gramsfoot! Fallback!

I think Grandpa figured it would keep us out of the way of the construction, and it did.

Since mom liked fish so much we got to go fishing almost every day. My Grandpa was really happy about that

I think I'm going to catch an elephant
