Session 7 : School

In our last session, Atlas, you mentioned one of your parents had some reluctance in sending you to school.

Yeah, that would be my dad. He wasn't too keen on the idea of me going to a traditional school.

So Robi, why does Atlas think he's not going to school?

Well I was just thinking it would be better for him if we taught him at home.

Why on earth would we do that?

Well between you and me and your parents we know just about everything. We could keep traveling, show him the world. Don't you think that would be better than letting him become a cog in the Legacy Land educational system?

But Robi, you're working on your thesis, and all the new research from this summer that you have to compile, you barely have any time as it is. Besides, I'm going to have my hands full soon.

Yeah but Cal, this is Atlas. We can't just give him to anyone.

Well I wasn't going to throw him on the first bus that drives past the house. Of course he's going to go to private school. Will you at least come and look at it?

Fine. But only to point out what's wrong with an already broken system.

When you were a child, did you know what you wanted to be when you grew up?

Oh the usual stuff. A pirate, an astronaut, a ninja. My dad had a very open minded philosophy about education. He wanted me to experience everything and he believed that life was the best teacher.

My mother liked to read to me

And Grandpa Soc always took me to play don't break the llama mama with Uncle Apollo and Uncle Gallileo.

Atlas, today your mother and I are going to look at a school for you.

I thought I wasn't going to school. You said you were my teacher.

Well, I am. But your mother wants us to look at a school. It's new, it's in Legacyville and it's called Legacy Academy. It's a private school.

Dad, I don't want to go.

Ok Atlas, you don't have to. But can I ask why not?

I don't want anyone to see my underwears.

Well Atlas, no one is going to see your underwear at school.

Uh uh, if I go to a private school. Mom says underwear is private. I don't want to go Dad.

Oh Atlas, private school just means.... well it means you wear a uniform.

What's that?

It's like dress up clothes. Like what grown ups wear to work.

Grandpa wears a leaf to work. That's not even underwears.

Well yes, but that's a little different. Grandpa's a tree hugger. If you go, you'd wear regular dress up clothes.

And no underwears?

Well, not that anyone would see.

So what do you think buddy? Is it ok if Mom and I go check out this school?

Yeah. I guess so.
